A dragon rises from the floor.
Detail of the title page of the 1631 edition of Dr. Faustus.
Folger Shakespeare Library.

Henslowe's Diary provides many clues about the properties the actors used.

  • Item, i copper target [shield], & xvii foils [rapiers for duelling, as in the last scene of Hamlet].
  • Item, paid for carpenters' work & making the throne in the Heavens, the 4 of June 1595.
  • Item, i dragon in Faustus.

The "heavens" was the name given to the roof projecting over the stage. A throne could be let down from it by pulley.
