Description

On the theory that language itself is a major theme of this 'curiously prolix' play, script editor David Snodin and the director elected to retain the Peter Alexander text with only minor cuts and alterations. One fairly major switch is moving the battlefield back to Troy in the last scene on the grounds that it is neater to have the play end where it begins. An interesting casting decision was giving the role of Thersites to The Incredible Orlando (Jack Birkett), the Caliban of the Derek Jarman filmed Tempest and a key member of the London-based Lindsay Kemp theatrical group. Birkett, a blind mime and female impersonator, also played Hippolyta/Titania in the Kemp 1984 Midsummer Night's Dream (see 416)
