Description

The richness of the Shakespearean acting tradition behind these BBC plays is illustrated by the cast for this play. Elizabeth Spriggs, who plays Mistress Quickly, took the role of Mistress Alice Ford in an RSC production at London's Aldwych theatre in 1968. Many will also remember Miss Spriggs as an unforgettable Calphurnia in the BBC Julius Caesar. Ben Kingsley, the star of this production, shortly afterwards became internationally celebrated for his movie role as Gandhi. British audiences also have an advantage not available to North Americans in that they may recognize many of these actors from their roles in domestic popular tv shows
