Richard L. Hay

RICHARD L. HAY is in Ashland for his fifth season at the Oregon Shakespearean Festival, and is in his third year as Technical Director and Stage Designer. He received his Bachelor degree in Architecture at Stanford University;\where he also obtained his M.A. in Theatre Arts. With a Fulbright scholarship, he spent a year at the University of Bristol in England, While there, he studied operation procedures at the Bristol Old Vic, and at other repertory theatres in England and Germany. During this past year, he remained in Ashland and created preliminary designs of the Festivals proposed building project.

RICHARD L. HAY, Stage Designer and Technical Director, returns to Ashland for his tenth season with the Oregon Shakespearean Festival. He completed his Bachelor degree in Architecture and his M.A. in Theatre Arts at Stanford University, followed by a year at the University of Bristol, England, as a Fulbright Scholar. While in England, he studied operational procedures at the Bristol Old Vic and at other repertory theatres both in England and in Germany. He is the designer of the new Festival Theatre and was closely associated with its construction. He was Staff Designer for the Stanford Players and Instructor in Stage Design at Stanford University for five years. This past year Mr. Hay has been pursuing his designing career in New York and was assistant to designer Boris Aronsen for Andorra and assistant to designer Ming Cho Lee for the widely acclaimed Broadway production of Mother Courage. In Boston he again assisted Mr. Lee for a production of Madame Butterfly. At the close of the Festival season, Mr, Hay returns to New York.

RICHARD L. HAY returns for his thirteenth season on the Production Staff. He is also Theatre Design Consultant for the new Angus Bowmer Theatre and designed the present outdoor Festival Theatre. As Designer for the Stanford Repertory Theatre since its formation, his designs have included scenery for Prometheus Bound, Antony and Cleopatra, and Brecht^s Man is Man, among many other productions. This past summer he designed scenery and costumes for the Tyrone Guthrie Theatre production of Brechts The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, which opened in Minneapolis and later toured to New York and Los Angeles. Mr. Hay received his M.A. degree in Theatre Arts from Stanford University, where he was Staff Designer five years for the Stanford Players. He rejoined the Stanford faculty in 1965 as Associate Professor of Stage Design. During three previous seasons in New York City, he assisted on a number of Broadway productions and was assistant to designer Boris Aronson for the Lincoln Center Repertory. Mr. Hay is set designer for this seasons Festival production of Virtue in Danger and will become a member of the rull-time resident staff following the 1969 season.

RICHARD L. HAY returns for his fourth season at the Festival, his second as Technical and Art Director, and will remain in Ashland this Fall to complete plans for remodelling of the theatre. He received his Bachelors degree in Architecture at Stanford University and continued there to earn his M. A. in Theatre and Drama. This year Dick spent at the University of Bristol in England on a Fulbright scholarship, as visiting Technical Director and designer for The Merger new play on an American theme. He studied operations of the Bristol Old Vic School and Old Vic Company, as well as other repertory theatres in England and Germany.

RICHARD L. HAY, Stage Designer, is in his twelfth season with the Oregon Shakespearean Festival. He received his M.A. in Theatre Arts from Stanford University and, for a year, studied operational procedures at English and German repertory companies under a Fulbright Scholarship. At Stanford University he held for five years the position of Staff Designer for the Stanford Players. During the past three years in New York, Mr. Hay designed the settings for Nicolai Gogols Diary of a Madman, More recently, among other assignments, he was assistant to designer Boris Aronson on Arthur Millers Incident at Vichy for the Lincoln Center Repertory Company and to designer Ming Cho Lee on the new Tennessee Williams plays. Mr. Hay is the designer of the theatre used by the Oregon Shakespearean Festival. In the fall of 1965 he will assume the post of Associate Professor in Scene Design at Stanford University, and will be the designer for the newly established repertory company at Stanford.

As Festival Scene and Theatre Designer, he has designed over 60 Ashland productions, as well as the famed outdoor Elizabethan stage-house. He also designed the stage and auditorium of the Angus Bow-mer Theatre.
