Shakespeare in Performance: Film

Julius Caesar (1951, Leonard Brett)

TitleJulius Caesar
Release LocationsGB
DirectorLeonard Brett
Length2 hrs, 7 mins
Play ConnectionsJulius Caesar (teleplay)

Another ambitious televised version of Julius Caesar on which the producers lavished nearly £2,000 and for which they enlisted the services of some 63 actors, principals and extras. By 1951 television audiences were sufficiently large so that Mr. Harrison expected to receive "shoals of letters from clever viewers pointing out the anachonisms" in his production, which he of course deliberately employed (WAC [TS/272] Feb. 28, 1951). After all one of the most often cited anachronisms in the canon appears in this play—the clock that strikes long before clocks were invented
