About the painting

In this portrait of the Holy Family with the infant John the Baptist, there is a visual context--the scene is painted in perspective, the colouring is realistic (if idealized), the children are painted in proportion, and they are engaged in a suitably childish tug-of-war.

The painting is also dramatic, with a strong light in the foreground, and a vital movement as the eye is drawn to focus on the Christ Child.

Bonifazio Veronese (1487-1553) ran a workshop in Venice, where he painted works much influenced by Titian.

The Renaissance

Rest on the flight into Egypt (detail). Bonifazio. Art Gallery of South Australia.

Like their medieval precursors, Renaissance painters were concerned with meaning and the ideal, but there were several developments that led to a more naturalistic style.
