Cedric Messina, who was subsequently to play a major role as the first producer of the BBC series, "The Shakespeare Plays," made a preliminary test of the waters with a series of eight Shakespeare plays on British television. This version of Romeo and Juliet was one of the first in a cluster that appeared between 1967 and 1975
