Description
The handful of people in the greater London area who owned television sets and who happened to have them tuned in witnessed an historic event on this cold February afternoon in 1937—the first transmission ever of scenes from a Shakespearean play. The huge Shakespeare on television industry can be said to have sprung from this decidedly inauspicious, and widely ignored, event. As with the beginnings of Shakespeare on film in Britain, the beginnings of Shakespeare on television drew heavily on theatrical talent from the London stage. The program based on As You Like It, Act Three, scene two, was then immediately followed by a second Shakespeare program featuring scenes from Henry V
