Description
Royston Morley, the BBC drama producer, poured energy and enthusiasm into this postwar King Lear that was the most ambitious Shakespeare production in many years. His attempts to persuade John Gielgud to play the title role failed because the star was in Mexico at the time, but the cast was made up of well-known stage actors. By today's standards, the budget was tiny (somewhat over £2,000) but the fan mail was nevertheless abundant (WAC T5/247, 22 Aug. 1948)
