SeriesThe Shakespeare Plays

As the inaugural performance in the USA of the unprecedented series known as "The Shakespeare Plays," the North American televising of this production had special interest for Shakespeareans. Director Herbert Wise's previous success with I, Claudius, which had captured a wide following among public television viewers, seemed to make him particularly well suited for taking on yet more Roman history. Mr. Wise himself, however, saw little connection. To him Shakespeare's play was not really about Rome at all but a tale of Elizabethan England disguised as a Roman history play
