Description

The Ford Foundation sponsored Omnibus, a Sunday afternoon program of remarkably high quality. In fact during that period, the programming on commercial television was so excellent on Sunday afternoons that one was tempted to drop everything else to watch it. Even so, in a prophetic article, Jack Gould warned against the peril of the show's becoming too "arty," for fear that loss of a wide audience could undermine support. Unhappily events proved Gould right ("Momentary Lapse," NYT 25 Jan. 1953: X 13)
