Mark von Eschen

Mark is the Artistic Director of Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan. His association with the company goes back to 1989 when he was a member of the Friends of Shakespeare Board. In 1990 he was a Production Manager for Twelfth Night and Othello under Artistic Director Gordon McCall. Mark attended the University of Calgary, completing his Master of Fine Arts in Theatre (Directing) in 1994 before rejoining the company as part of the Stage Management team: for the next five seasons Mark stage managed all of the tragedies produced by the company. In 1999, Henry Woolf appointed Mark as the Associate Artistic Director, and that season he directed the acclaimed 1950's A Midsummer Night's Dream, while stage managing Romeo and Juliet and The Festival Frolics. Mark took over as Artistic Director in 2001 upon Henry's retirement. Mark normally "winters" as Lighting Designer at Persephone Theatre, but loves directing at his summer home: Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan.

For the company's 1991 production of As You Like It Mark was Production Manager / Technical Director and collaborated on the original music with Tom Rooney and John Wright. That summer John also taught Mark the joys of gardening. Now, along with Shakespeare, Mark has a passion for Hybrid Tea Roses. Past directing credits for Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan include: Rosencrantz and Guildenstren Are Dead, the acclaimed 1950's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, Richard III, Love's Labours Lost, The Merry Wives of Windsor, as well as productions of Hamlet and Ben Jonson's The Alchemist.
