James Sandoe

JAMES SANDOE, Boulder, Colorado, returns fur nis eleventh Festival season, ending an absence of seven years. A veteran theatre man, Mr. Sandoe is remembered for his direction of a variety of Festival productions, among them Troilus and Cressida^ which marked the completion of the canon at Ashland, and The Duchess of Malfi, our first non-Shakespearean play. He is a graduate of Stanford University, holds an M.A. degree from Columbia University, and is an Associate Professor of English and Humanities at the University of Colorado in Boulder. His long list of credits includes seven years as a Director at the Colorado Shakespeare Festival, where he directed Lovers Labours Lost^ Othello^ Richard III, King John, Macbeth, Merry Wives of Windsor y Titus AndronicuSy and Hamlet. During these same years, he has also directed The Way of the World^ The White Devil, and Scapin for the University of Colorado Theatre and Anatoly La Ronde^ and Mandragola for the Nomad Players of Boulder. For 15 years, he was mystery reviewer for the Chicago Sun Times and the New York Herald Tribune. He is currently reviewing scholarly books and plays for The Library Journal.

JAMES SANDOE, after an absence of one year, returns to the Festival directorial staff for his sixth season in Ashland. Mr. Sandoe resides in Boulder, Colorado, where he is an Assistant Professor of Humanities and Purchasing Librarian for the University of Colorado. He is also widely known as an anthologist and critic for the New York Herald Tribune in the field of crime fiction. Mr. Sandoe received his education at Stanford, Columbia, and the University of California. Festival audiences have applauded a wide variety of productions under his direction, including Richard 77, Antony and Cleopatra Measure For Measure, A Midsummer Nights Dream and the Henry VI trilogy. As an actor, he made his first Festival appearance in 1948 as Aragon, and has played many other roles here, including Mercutio, Baptista, Glendower, and Nym.
