Robert B. Loper

ROBERT B. LOPER, of Menio Park, California, returns this year to Ashland for his second season of directing on the Oregon Shakespearearan Festival stage. An Assistant Professor in the department of Speech and Drama, and a Staff Director at Stanford University, Mr. Loper has had seven years of Shakespearean experience, acquired at Stanford, the University of Colorado, and Birmingham University in England, which has included acting assignments as Malvolio in Twelfth Night and Edmund in King Lear. 1955 Festival audiences will remember him for his portrayal of the title role in Macbeth. That same season he directed Ails Well That Ends Well and Timon of Athens. He received his doctorate in Elizabethan Literature at Birmingham University in England.

ROBERT B. LOPER is in Ashland for his sixth season as a Festival Director. A graduate of the University of Colorado, Mr. Loper received a Fulbright grant and completed his doctorate in Elizabethan literature at Birmingham University in England. He is currently Professor of Drama and Executive Head of the Department of Speech and Drama at Stanford University. Mr. Loper has been a guest director at the Vancouver, B.C., International Arts Festival and as guest director at the Actor's Workshop in San Francisco staged Ben Jonson's The Alchemist. While on sabbatical leave from Stanford, he returned to England for further literary and theatrical research. During the summer of 1962, he was director for the Contemporary Theatre Workshop at Stanford University and played a central role in the American premiere production of Bertolt Brecht's Man is Man, directed by Alan Schneider. During the past two years at Stanford, Mr. Loper staged the rarely produced Gluck opera, Iphigenia in Tauris and also staged the premiere production of Night Flight or Volo De Notte by Dallapiccola.
