Shakespeare in Performance: Person
Harcourt Williams
Ernest George Harcourt Williams (1880-1957), usually credited as "Harcourt Williams," began his career with Frank Benson's company. He was a producer at the Old Vic from 1929 until 1934, where his Shakespeare productions won him high praise as he moved away from Victorian and Edwardian concepts towards more modern and controversial stagings. Williams also performed in films, including two Shakespeare productions: in Laurence Olivier's 1944 production of Henry V he played King Charles VI of France, and he was the First Player in Olivier's 1948 Hamlet.
