Shakespeare in Performance: Person

Mrs. Dorothea Jordan

Dorothea Jordan (1761–1816) was an Irish actress and courtesan. She assumed the stage name "Mrs. Jordan" because it was slightly more respectable for a married woman to be on the stage. In fact, there was no "Mr. Jordan" and Dorothea Bland never married, though she was known for having many affairs and fostering many illegitimate children. Most notably, she was the mistress and companion of the future King William IV for 20 years while he was Duke of Clarence. Together they had ten children, all of whom took the surname FitzClarence.
