More special effects
In this composite scene from Greene's play Friar Bacon and Friar Bungay, the brazen head speaks, "Time is. Time was. Time is past," while Friar Bacon and his servant sleep. A Kempe-like clown (from a different scene) is on the left.
Notice what may be stage props: in addition to the head, there is a bookshelf, a simple stool, an elaborate chair, and an armillary sphere (top right) to give the impression of a mind learned in esoteric lore.
Although the play was first published in 1594, the edition of this engraving was published in 1630, and there is no clear proof that these props would have been used in the first performances.
