  • Henry IV, Part 1

    By William Shakespeare

    Edited by Rosemary Gaby

Quick start: Henry IV, Part 1 (Modern)

    Introduction

    Texts of this edition

The earliest surviving copies of Henry IV, Part 1 were printed in 1598, within two years of the play's first performance. Unusually, two quarto editions of the play were printed that year, Q0 and Q1. All that remains of Q0 is a single sheet containing eight pages of the play. Q1 contains the complete play and appears to have been directly printed from Q0. Another five quarto editions appeared before the version printed in the First Folio (F1) in 1623, which appears to have been printed from the fifth quarto. The modern text for this edition is based on Q1, apart from the pages that have survived from Q0.
