Biographies
Roberta Barker
Roberta Barker is Associate Professor in the Dalhousie Theatre Department where she has taught since 2001. Prior to this she taught in the English Department at Mount Allison University. She received her doctorate in English Literature at the Shakespeare Institute, University of Birmingham, in 2000, after completing her BA at the University of King's College and her MA at Dalhousie University. She has directed theatre productions at all three institutions. Dr. Barker is currently doing research in the field of early modern drama and performance for a number of projects, including an editorial role in the publication of the New Variorum edition of "A Midsummer Night's Dream". Her book, The Destined Livery: Early Modern Tragedy, Gender and Performance, 1980-2000, is forthcoming from Palgrave Macmillan. She has also published articles in Shakespeare Quarterly, English Studies in Canada, Early Modern Literary Studies, Modern Drama, and Early Theatre.
Sidney Berger
Dr. Sidney Berger is the Director of the University of Houston School of Theatre; founder and producing director of the Houston Shakespeare Festival and co-founder and producer of the Children's Theatre Festival, UH's professional summer projects. He has directed many productions for both the Houston Shakespeare Festival and the UH School of Theatre. [Back]
Tom Bradac
Tom Bradac's 28 year professional career in the theatre has been highlighted by his founding the Grove Shakespeare Festival (1979-1991) and guiding it during a 13 season tenure were he produced and/or directed 110 productions. His most recent project has been the creation of Shakespeare Orange County (1992-present), currently completing its tenth season. Tom was awarded the prestigious Hollywood Drama-logue "Publisher's Award" for Exceptional Achievement in Theatre (1991) for his work with Grove Shakespeare Festival, the OC Weekly Helena Modjeska Award (1997) for his contributions to theatre in Orange County and more recently the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre "Excellence in Education" Award for his work at Chapman University(2001). He is a founding director of the Shakespeare Theatre Association of America, a national service organization for theatres/universities dedicated to producing professional Shakespearean productions, and has served as president. A former member of South Coast Repertory, he is currently Associate Professor of Theatre at Chapman University in Orange. [Back]
Lesley Schisgall Currier
Lesley Schisgall Currier is the founding Managing Director of Marin Shakespeare Company, established in 1989. She is President Elect of the Shakespeare Theatre Association of America and served for six years on Theatre Bay Area's Theatre Services Committee. With her husband Robert, Artistic Director of Marin Shakespeare, Lesley founded the Baja Shakespeare Festival in Los Barriles, Mexico in 2001. Lesley is the recipient of the Francis LeMoyne Page award for Theatre from Princeton University, her alma mater. [Back]
Linda Dean
Linda Henry Dean, director of education at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, administers programing that includes a lecture series, teacher seminars, student matinees, print materials, Camp Shakespeare and the Shakespeare Intensive, actor residencies in schools, and ASF Academy. She teaches in the University of Alabama/ASF graduate program in Theatre Management. In 2000, she was appointed a Fellow of the Salzburg Seminar in Salzburg, Austria. She served on the executive board of Shakespeare Theatre Association of America (1999-2000). She also is a board member of the Alabama Writers' Forum and of the Alabama Institute for Education in the Arts, which promotes discipline-based arts education through teacher-training programs. The Alabama Writers' Forum provides a communication network for Southern writers. Prior to joining the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Ms. Dean wrote and edited literature and composition textbooks. Richard Garner
Richard Garner is the co-founder and Producing Artistic Director of Georgia Shakespeare Festival, a 17-year old LORT D company located in Atlanta. Richard is the current President of the Shakespeare Theatre Association of America and has served on theatre panels for the Southern Arts Federation, Georgia Council for the Arts and the South Carolina Arts Commission. He studied acting in the American Conservatory Theatre Professional Actor Training Program and is a 2000 winner of the Metropolitan Atlanta Arts and Business Council ABBY award for outstanding arts professional. David Dreyfoos
David Dreyfoos is currently the Producing Director for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival where he also stage managed two productions in his first two seasons. Other producing credits include, Associate Producer for The Magic Fire at the Kennedy Center and 13 years as Producer, Director and Production Stage Manager for Chrysler Canada. He was Production Stage Manager at North Shore Music Theatre, The MUNY (St.Louis), Starlight Musical's (Indianapolis), Opera Memphis, Indianapolis Opera and was Stage Manager at the Indiana Repertory Theatre for six seasons. David has worked in film and has stage managed several network television specials. [Back]
Tina Packer
Tina Packer is the founder and Artistic Director; President of Shakespeare & Company. She trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where she won the Ronson Award for Most Outstanding Performer. In Britain, she was an associate artist with the Royal Shakespeare Company, performed in the West End, and acted with repertory companies in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Leicester, and Coventry. She worked for the BBC and ITV television companies and in film. As an actor, she worked John Barton, Peter Hall, John Schlessinger, Ian McKellan, Paul Scofield, Janet Suzman, and Ian Richardson, among others. At Shakespeare & Company Tina has directed 44 productions, recently including Coriolanus, The Merchant of Venice, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Julius Caesar, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Henry IV Part 1, and Summer. She has been Artistic Director of the Boston Shakespeare Company, and at regional theatres has directed many plays by Shakespeare. She is the subject of the WGBH documentary Sex, Violence and Poetry: A Portrait of Tina Packer, and Helen Epstein's biography The Companies She Keeps. In 1994-95 she received Guggenheim and Bunting Fellowships to create and perform her unique trilogy of work, Women of Will. She is the recipient of more than 16 awards, honors, and fellowships. Tina's book, Power Plays: Shakespeare's Lessons in Leadership & Management, co-authored with Columbia Business School professor John O. Whitney, was published by Simon & Schuster last year. Tina currently is working with Scholastic Books on adapting Shakespeare's stories for children, and she is spearheading the international effort to construct The Rose Playhouse U.S.A. in Lenox. Paul Prescott
Paul Prescott is Associate Professor in English at the University of Warwick. He has acted and taught Shakespeare in the UK, Japan and the US, most recently as Associate Artist with the Palm Beach Shakespeare Festival, Florida. His publications include Shakespeare Handbooks: Richard III (Palgrave, 2006), articles on theatre criticism in Shakespeare Survey 57 and the Blackwell Companion to Shakespeare and Performance, and reviews for Cahiers Elizabethans and Shakespeare Bulletin. He is currently working on Shakespeare and the Director (with Dennis Kennedy; for Oxford University Press) and a stage history of Troilus and Cressida for Manchester University Press. David Prosser
In his 14-year career with Canada's oldest daily newspaper, The Kingston Whig-Standard, David Prosser won three National Newspaper Awards for critical and editorial writing, five Nathan Cohen Awards for theatre criticism and a Centre for Investigative Journalism Award for a series of stories that he later turned into a book, Out of Afghanistan. He pursued his interest in acting and directing on the side, playing major roles with local professional groups. In 1991 he was awarded a Southam Fellowship to study at the University of Toronto, where he appeared in a production of Macbeth directed by Robert Lepage. Now, as the Stratford Festival's Director of Literary Services, he oversees the editorial content of all Festival publications and provides occasional dramaturgical assistance. He is currently Secretary of the Shakespeare Theatre Association of America. [Back]
Jim Volz
Jim Volz is a national arts consultant specializing in Shakespearean Festivals. He is also an author, producer and professor at California State University, Fullerton. He is an arts writer for New York's Back Stage, editor of the Shakespeare Theatre Association of America's Quarto, and associate editor of the University of Colorado's On-Stage Studies. He has published more than 100 articles on management, arts criticism, Shakespeare, and theatre in Theatre Research International (OUP), Drama-Logue, and Back Stage. He is the author of Shakespeare Never Slept Here, and with his wife, Evelyn Carol Case, Snippets from Shakespeare. Jim is President of Consultants for the Arts, Past President of the National Theatre Conference, and a National Advisory Council Member for the Institute of Outdoor Drama based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. From 1982-1991, Jim was Managing Director of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival and has more recently been consultant to theatres and arts centers in Pennsylvania, Virginia, Nebraska, Ohio, South Carolina, Florida, New York, Idaho, Illinois, Tennessee, Texas, Florida, Colorado, and Arizona.
