Description
Though not a live performance, this film documents Trevor Nunn's original stage production with the Royal Shakespeare Company. The cameras remain free to move among the actors and there is some attention to cinematography and framing, so the final product is a well documented stage production, not archival footage. Opera baritone Willard White acquits himself well in the lead role, with a physical stiffness and a melodious voice. Ian McKellen's Iago is sharp and self-absorbed. Imogen Stubbs is by far the best Desdemona I have ever seen, imbuing the character with dignity, grace, and a naive enthusiasm that does not detract from her intelligence. The production is also notable for its interesting use of double and triple casting.
