This is the identical Royal Shakespeare Company production listed above under Record #52. It was televised for U.S. audiences by WNET. An astonishing number of high quality U.S. television broadcasts, not only including Shakespeare but also other dramatists, have had their origins in the British television industry. So far commercial television in the United States has been unable to match the British in quality, though the toppling of the BBC user tax, which has been threatened by the Thatcher government, may well also force British programmers to compete for the lowest common denominator of viewer taste
