Description
To give some idea of the degree of interest in Shakespeare that the media then exhibited, it is worth noting that in this same week a radio, not tv, program featured John Barrymore reading from Hamlet, Macbeth, Richard III, and Twelfth Night on NBC at 8 P.M. on Thursdays. The week before this presentation of Richard III, Masterpiece Playhouse had offered Ibsen's Hedda Gabler with Jessica Tandy in the title role. In the halcyon early days of television, obviously there was still faith in the reality of a mass audience for great drama
