Description
Professor Ball remarks that its innovative idea of modernizing the Othello story into a "scandal" film marked the end of the Film d'Art movement, which in the early silent days had insisted on sticking more or less faithfully to theatrical and literary representations of the Shakespearean text. The film in its concern with the collapse of firm demarcations between illusion and reality also prefigures such later re-inscriptions of Othello as George Cukor's 1947 A Double Life (446) starring Ronald Colman
