Except for part five, which depicts the assassination of Caesar, this film is more indebted to Plutarch's Lives than it is to Shakespeare. It remains important, however, as an example of the highly influential Italian art film. Director Enrico Guazzoni's interest in film spectacle, which peaked with his 1912 Quo Vadis, attracted world wide attention. He was especially interested in literary adaptations
