Description
The third segment of the BBC minor tetralogy (see also 186, 187 and 513). Henry Fenwick gives a fascinating account of problems faced by the lighting personnel and pays high tribute to Sam Barclay, the lighting designer, who was "perhaps the most crucial figure in the look of the production." In charge of the lighting of all four plays of the sequence, Barclay cleverly "rung changes" to give the impression of a much greater variety of mise en scène than was actually the case. His task, says Fenwick, then became one of answering the challenge of each scene moment by moment. Whether it was a little cell or great palace, it remained the same set with only the ingenuity of the lighting to keep it unique (Fenwick, Henry VI, Part Three BSP 23)
