Description

"This film is a Spanish-Swiss venture from Internacional Films Española, S.A.-Alpine productions. The exteriors were filmed in Spain at Calatañazor, Lecumberri, Lesaca, Cardona, Soria, Madrid, Colmenar Viejo, Avila, Móstoles and the Monastery of Santa María de Huerta" (Bothwell, Candace); Manvell also notes that Welles "in addition to producing, scripting, directing and playing, designed the sets and costumes. Emiliano Piedra and Ángel Escolano were respectively a film producer and lawyer, who as friends of Welles made the filming possible in Spain" (Manvell, 71). Although a great film artist, Mr. Welles enjoyed less success with bankers and often had to go outside of normal channels to obtain financing for his movies. The film draws for its scenario on elements taken from the major tetralogy (R2, 1 and 2H4, H5) as well as Merry Wives and Holinshed's Chronicles
