Patrick Hines

RAYE BIRK, Ashland, Oregon, joins the Festival for his third season; his second as a Festival Director. For the current season, ' 'as directed A Midsummer Night's Li van i, vviHuii also played for the STAGE II season. He also plays the title role in Macbeth and Thomas More in A Man for All Seasons. He holds a B.S. in Theatre from Northwestern University and an M.F.A. in Theatre from the University of Minnesota. As an Instructor in Acting at Southern Methodist University (1967-1970), he directed Arsenic and Old Lace and Spoon River Anthology, and also played the title role in Caligula and Enrico IV. In 1970, he directed the Festival production of Moliere's The Imaginary Invalid. His Ashland roles have included Shylock in The Merchant of Venice^ Malvolio in Twelfth Night and Cassius in Julius Caesar. He and his wife, Candace, have recently served as guest lecturers for the English Department at the University of Oregon. Last Fall, he played the role of Buffalo Bill in Arthur Kopit's Indians as guest artist at the Tulsa Little Theatre.

PATRICK HINES, last season's Henry YIII and director of Hamlet, returns as Guest Artist and Director for the fourth season with the Festival. He has appeared in over thirty of Shakespeare's plays. During the past year he appeared as Captain Boyle in Juno and the Paycock, and as Bottom in A Midszimmer Night's Dream with the Seattle Repertory Theatre $ and as Max in Pinter's The Homeeoming at the Trinity Square Theatre in Providence, Rhode Island. With the American Shakespeare Festival for ten seasons, he played Gloucester in Alien Fletcher's acclaimed production of King Lear; appeared with Katharine Hepburn and Alfred Drake in Much Ado About Nothing and with Bert Lahr in A Midsummer Night's Dream. Broadway audiences have seen Mr. Hines in (VNeilPs The Great God Brown; with Eric Portman and Dame Gladys Cooper in A Passage to India; and most recently in The Devils, with Anne Bancroft and Jason Robards. He has directed for the Fred Miller Theatre, Milwaukee, and the Seattle Repertory Theatre, where he also created the roles of Fal-staff in Henry IV, Pat in The Hostage, and Danforth in The Crucible, among others. He is a graduate oi Hie University of Texas, where he studied with B. Iden Payne.

There he played Gloucester opposite Morris Carnovskys King Lear in Alien Fletcher's acclaimed production. He was also seen with Katharine Hepburn and Alfred Drake in Much Ado About Nothing and with Bert Lahr in A Midsummer Nights Dream. He has appeared in over thirty of Shakespeare^s plays in over eighty stagings. Broadway audiences have seen him in Neils The Great God Brown, with Eric Portman and Gladys Cooper in A Passage to India, and most recently he was featured in The Devils with Anne Bancroft and Jason Robards. He was assistant director at Stratford, Connecticut and has directed for the Fred Miller Theatre in Milwaukee and the Seattle Repertory Theatre. He has worked off-Broadway in The FantasTicks and two seasons at the Phoenix Theatre. At the Seattle Repertory Theatre he has played Falstaff in Henry IV, Pat in The Hostage, Danforth in The Crucible, and Peachum in The Three Penny Opera, He graduated from the University of Texas where he studied with B. Iden Payne.
