Editorial principles and publishing history: The transcripts presented here follow the Quarto as exactly as an electronic version permits; spelling follows the original, with no attempt to correct errors; word spacing is normalized; and modern forms are substituted for letters and ligatures that have no modern equivalent in current browsers (for example, the long 's').
Pericles was not printed in the First Folio of 1623; it was first printed in Quarto, dated 1609. Its origins are unclear; there is wide agreement that the play was only partly by Shakespeare (principally the latter half), and that the current text is a very poor one and may be incomplete. Opinions differ as to who may have been Shakespeare's collaborator. The current leading contender is George Wilkins.
