Author: William ShakespeareEditors: Hardy M. Cook, Ian LancashirePeer Reviewed

¶ALack what pouerty my Mu
se brings forth,
¶That hauing
such a skope to
show her pride,
¶The argument all bare is of more worth
1535Then when it hath my added prai
se be
side.
¶Oh blame me not if I no more can write!
¶Looke in your gla
sse and there appeares a face,
¶That ouer-goes my blunt inuention quite,
¶Dulling my lines,
_and doing me di
sgrace.
1540Were it not
sinfull then
striuing to mend,
¶To marre the
subiect that before was well,
¶For to no other pa
sse my ver
ses tend,
¶Then of your graces and your gifts to tell.
¶_And more,
_much more then in my ver
se can
sit,
1545Your owne gla
sse
showes you,
_when you looke in it.
¶TO me faire friend you neuer can be old,
¶For as you were when fir
st your eye I eyde,
¶Such
seemes your beautie
still:Three Winters colde,
1550Haue from the forre
sts
shooke three
summers pride,
¶Three beautious
springs to yellow
Autumne turn'd,
¶In proce
sse of the
sea
sons haue I
seene,
¶Three Aprill perfumes in three hot Iunes burn'd,
¶Since fir
st I
saw you fre
sh which yet are greene.
1555Ah yet doth beauty like a Dyall hand,
¶Steale from his figure,
_and no pace perceiu'd,
¶So your
sweete hew,
_which me thinkes
still doth
stand
¶Hath motion,
_and mine eye may be deceaued.
¶_For feare of which,
_heare this thou age vnbred,
1560Ere you were borne was beauties
summer dead.
¶LEt not my loue be cal'd Idolatrie,
¶Nor my beloued as an Idoll
show,
¶Since all alike my
songs and prai
ses be
1565To one,
_of one,
_still
such,
_and euer
so.
¶Kinde is my loue to day,
_to morrow kinde,
¶Still con
stant in a wondrous excellence,
¶Therefore my ver
se to con
stancie confin'de,
¶One thing expre
ssing,
_leaues out difference.
1570Faire,
_kinde,
_and true,
_is all my argument,
¶Faire,
_kinde and true,
_varrying to other words,
¶And in this change is my inuention
spent,
¶Three theams in one,
_which wondrous
scope affords.
¶_Faire,
_kinde,
_and true,
_haue often liu'd alone.
1575_Which three till now,
_neuer kept
seate in one.
