The second Globe

Reduced from the image on the Globe site at the University of Reading.

As the engraving shows, the second Globe was a fine building, with a larger stage and the "heavens" covering a larger part of the pit where the groundlings stood.

Wenceslaus Hollar engraved this view of London in 1644, from sketches made earlier. In the process of engraving, the names of the Bear Garden (where bears were baited) and the Globe were transposed. Hollar's sketch has been shown to be remarkably accurate in its dimensions, even if he got the name wrong.

Compare with the first Globe.
